Hugely experienced midfield player, previously a one-club man, who signed for Forest after getting on for 500 games for Preston, the vast majority of them in the second tier. Having worked with McKenna before, Billy Davies knew exactly what he was getting - namely a real Captain, an on-field leader and an unflashy, hard-working out-and-out professional.
The Forest fans soon realised his worth, too; he sits at the heart of Forest's midfield, always available and constantly talking to his team-mates, allowing others such as Raddy Madjewski to flourish ahead of him - and to add the sort of know-how that the young side so clearly lacked for much of their first season back in the Championship. It was also inevitable, somehow, that he would score his first Forest goal with a rasping 25-yard volley against his old team... and show his class by refusing to celebrate too much.
He reminds me a bit of John McGovern; perhaps not destined to be fully appreciated as a star, but completely vital to the team. In short, McKenna is the sort of midfield player Forest have been needing for about 10 years. A great signing.
