Scottish International defensive midfield player, nicknamed "3 lungs" at Carrow Road for his prodigious workrate. Whenever I have seen him play against us in the past he has dominated our midfield, but for most of his first season at Forest he was awful - he'd been injured during pre-season, wasn't fully fit, and clearly (and pretty openly) wondered what on earth he had done to deserve a manager who screamed at him like an inadequate PE teacher. The fans assumed that we'd got him too late in his career and pretty much wrote him off.
However, once Megson left, it was a different story. By then he'd had time to get himself fit in the Stiffs, and he clearly took to the different managerial style of Frank Barlow and Charlie McParland - suddenly he once again looked a good player, improving with almost every game and starting to dominate midfield again.
However, the years were also passing by and gradually Holt - never exactly speedy - slowed down. Since his game was largely based on effort and stamina, this was bad news. He operated in a holding role in front of the back four, but frankly did not provide the security which that is supposed to provide, which in turn constrained Sammy Clingan who increasingly found himself unprepared to venture too far forward lest he be caught out by the ensuing counter-attack which Holt couldn't handle.
He departed in the Summer, not much mourned. He could have been exactly the player we needed, but instead proved to be just another OK pro coming to Forest for one final pay check.
