Ghana international centre forward signed early in Colin Calderwood's reign; Nathan Tyson had suffered a serious knee injury after only 3 minutes of the opening game of the season, and without him Forest completely lacked pace. His signing came somewhat out of the blue and many fans were underwhelmed, but as Agogo settled, gradually Calderwood's judgement was vindicated.
His pace was his most obvious asset, but there is more to him than that; in particular, he had the Peter Withe / Lee Chapman ability to act as target man, both holding it up and deflecting the ball with almost any part of his body - and his finishing wasn't bad. Injuries to both men at critical points in the run-in deprived us of the sight of Tyson & Agogo in harness during 2006-2007, but the suspicion was that with the right service they would be a real handful in harness the following season.
In the event it never really materialised - Tyson in particular continued to be plagued by intermittent but persistent injury. Agogo continued to be steady and effecitve, without ever completely setting the world alight. But then he went away with Ghana to the 2008 African Nations Cup, held on this occasion in his home country, and had a fine tournament. The UK press, with its shallow conviction that there cannot possibly be anyone worth bothering with who doesn't play in the Premier League, were sniffy - and certainly Agogo's control looked erratic in such lofty company... but he did keep on sticking the ball into the net, and became a big star in the eys of his nation.
Needless to say, having been offered (literally!) people's daughters in gratitude for his goals for the Black Stars, returning to NG2 was something of a come-down; for the rest of the season his head was, frankly, elsewhere - Forest's late charge to automatic promotion was achieved with him largely a bystander, though it was noticeable that Agogo made certain he was prominent in the celebratory photographs on the pitch!
Much talk of "wanting to play at a higher level" followed.... before he signed for FC Zamalek of Egypt, followed a season later by a move to the footballing hotbeds of Cyrpus. Money, of course, had nothing to do with it!
